If your teeth have been affected by decay or fractured to the point where a filling is not enough, inlays and onlays may be an alternative solution to restore your smile.

Inlays and onlays are custom made for you, and they are fabricated outside your mouth in the shape, size and material to exactly fit your tooth. They are mainly used when the fracture of your tooth cannot be repaired with a supportive filling. Inlays and onlays securely restore the functionality of your teeth and strengthen the durability of your bite.

What are inlays?

Inlays are hard-wearing restorative solutions to mend larger cavities in the back teeth where it’s easy for food and bacteria to get inside a damaged tooth. Inlays fill in the holes and cracks of the tooth, encompassing the chewing surface. If the cusp of your tooth is not affected, inlays can repair and secure your tooth and prevent it from getting infected.

What are onlays?

Similar to inlays, they are hard-wearing restorations that are made outside your mouth. Onlays are slightly larger than inlays, and they can repair the centre of the chewing surface of your tooth, as well as cover a missing cusp.

How are inlays and onlays fitted?

Since inlays and onlays are fabricated outside your mouth and are custom made to fit your tooth in shape, size and material, the procedure may involve two visits to our clinic. During your first visit, your dentist will clean the affected tooth to prepare it for the impressions. Once the bespoke inlays and onlays are designed for you, you will have your next appointment to cement the restorative solution to the affected tooth.

Is it painful?

Before the treatment, we can provide a local anaesthetic to ease any discomfort.
