A Michigan splint is a type of mouthguard that covers your upper or lower teeth to protect them from fractures and the adverse effects of bruxism. This oral appliance is made of thick material and is commonly used to defend your teeth from damage caused by bad habits such as tooth grinding.
What is bruxism?
Bruxism is the bad (yet mostly unconscious) habit of clenching and grinding your teeth. It may be caused by stress, nervousness and anxiety. This condition can affect people at any age and cause tooth wear, severe fractures, and heavy pressure on the temporomandibular joint.
How can a Michigan splint help?
Michigan splint is a custom-made prosthesis that is designed to fit over your teeth safely and efficiently. Its thickness provides some space between your teeth, lengthening and relaxing your facial muscles to decrease their ability to contract. Ideally, a Michigan splint reduces the tension in your jaw, resulting in the prevention of tooth wear and temporomandibular joint dysfunction.
