What is mouth cancer?
Oral cancer is a life-threatening tumour that can severely affect your overall health and lead to death if it is left untreated. It can develop anywhere around the oral area (gums, tongue, top/bottom of your mouth, cheeks and lips).
How do I know if I require mouth cancer screening?
Spotting the signs at an early stage can be lifesaving and prevent severe problems. If you’ve never had an oral cancer screening, or your last screening was more than 6 months ago (and you experience any symptoms), we highly recommend booking an examination.
Here are some of the most common mouth cancer symptoms:
- Bleeding ulcers around the oral area that don’t heal
- Bleeding ulcers, soreness, pain inside/outside your mouth with no apparent cause
- Lumps inside/outside your oral area
- Discoloured patches around the oral area
- Sore throat, difficulty swallowing that doesn’t seem to heal over time
- Severe pain, discomfort or stiffness in your jaw
- Loose teeth with no injuries or evident cause
Can mouth cancer be cured?
Thankfully, if the signs of mouth cancer are spotted quickly enough, the risks of developing life-threatening issues may be prevented, and oral cancer can be treated at an early stage.
