Severe pain and tension in your jaw may indicate a TMJ disorder that could interfere with your daily activities and communication.

What is TMJ dysfunction?

TMJ (also known as temporomandibular joint) is the hinge in front of your ears that connects your jaw to the temporal bones of your skull. When you suffer from TMJ dysfunction, your jaw and facial muscles become severely tense, causing discomfort and pain that may interfere with your life. An overworked jaw may cause headaches.

Symptoms of TMJ disorder

  • Severe headache caused by tension in your jaw
  • Pain and discomfort in your face, jaw, ears, neck and shoulders
  • Difficulty opening your mouth, chewing, or speaking
  • Inability to open your mouth wider (for example, when you attempt to yawn)
  • ‘Clicking’ sound around your jaw area when you open/close your mouth
  • Swelling on either side of your face

How can TMJ (temporomandibular joint) dysfunction be treated?

If you are concerned about pain, discomfort or tenderness in your jaw and experience any of the symptoms above, we suggest you book a consultation with us at Lenham Dental. We will gladly discuss the possible treatments to ease your discomfort.

We may suggest a Michigan splint as a possible option for treating the tension in your jaw during your sleep. If you would like to find out more about Michigan splints, please feel free to visit the dedicated page on our website.
