Although prevention and visits to your dentist are generally a valuable foundation for keeping teeth safe, sometimes damage may be irreparable, and a tooth may require removal.

If you are worried about having a missing tooth, your dentist may also be able to advise you of suitable treatments to replace your missing tooth and repair your smile. We will be happy to discuss your options upon your visit.

How are teeth extracted?

Tooth extraction may not be the most pleasant experience, but we always strive to provide you with good care and make your visits as positive as possible. Your dentist will administer a local anaesthetic to ease your discomfort before the procedure. Once the affected area is numbed, your dentist will remove your tooth with the required method.

Tooth extraction methods

  • Simple extraction: this is the type of tooth removal that is carried out when your tooth is fully visible. Your dentist will loosen your tooth to pull it out as gently and quickly as possible.
  • Surgical extraction: this method is performed when your tooth has broken down and is no longer visible above the gum line. This type of extraction requires a small cut in your gum to enable the removal of the remaining tooth.

Wisdom tooth extraction is performed when a wisdom tooth is badly injured, decayed or has erupted beneath your gum.

What happens after tooth extraction?

We will provide you with aftercare advice, depending on your case. You may experience some discomfort while the gums are healing, but it can be relieved with over-the-counter painkillers.

We recommend that you avoid alcohol and hot meals and drinks immediately after, and you may want to have a soft diet for a while.

If you enquire about missing tooth replacements, we will be happy to provide you with the necessary information about suitable restorations such as bridges, dentures and dental implants.
